ACLU Lawsuit Charges Grossly Inadequate Medical Care At State Prison In Nevada
After months of inaction during which prisoners have been forced to endure inhumane pain and suffering as a result of untreated medical conditions, the ACLU has filed a lawsuit against top corrections and government officials in Nevada in an effort to prompt much-needed sweeping improvements in the level of care given to inmates.

DHS Announces 11 Previously Unreported Deaths In Immigration Detention (08/17/2009) NEW YORK – Prompted by an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit seeking previously unreleased documents related to the deaths of immigration detainees in U.S. custody, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials today revealed 11 deaths that have occurred at detention facilities since 2004 that the government had previously failed to publicly disclose.
ACLU Says Failure To Properly Administer Medicines At Wisconsin Prison Puts Women's Lives At Risk (01/23/2009) MILWAUKEE – The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Wisconsin and the law firm of Jenner & Block today filed a motion in federal court seeking an immediate halt to the dangerously dysfunctional system of ordering and administering medication to prisoners at the Taycheedah Correctional Institution, Wisconsin's largest women's prison.
ACLU Calls On Sheriff Gusman To Improve Medical Intake (01/15/2009) Today the ACLU of Louisiana calls on Sheriff Marlin Gusman to conduct better medical screening in connection with the intake of prisoners, in light of the two deaths that have occurred at Orleans Parish Prison in the past week. "Unfortunately, many people in custody of Orleans Parish Prison have serious health conditions that are untreated," said Marjorie R. Esman, Executive Director of the ACLU of Louisiana. "This results in deaths that could be prevented with better medical attention."

Today, civil and disability rights attorneysare filing suit in U.S. District Court to stop the mistreatment.
ACLU Welcomes Immigration Detention Medical Treatment Legislation (05/05/2008) WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union applauds Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) for introducing H.R. 5950, the Detainee Basic Medical Care Act of 2008. This legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop procedures to ensure adequate medical care for all detainees held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The legislation also requires ICE to report detainee deaths to the DHS and Department of Justice Offices of Inspector General.
